Our condolences go out to the Borghi family for the passing of "Frank Borghi, the St. Louis goalie who was instrumental in pulling off one of the biggest upsets in soccer history." (stltoday.com) "Borghi, one of five players from St. Louis on the team, was in goal for the U.S. in the 1950 World Cup in Brazil where the American defeated England, at the time considered one of the best teams in the world, 1-0. 'I was hoping to hold them down to a few goals,' Borghi told the Post-Dispatch in 2009. 'Maybe four or five goals.'" Mr. Borghi was one of Duane's earliest grade school coaches. Duane recalls him as "humble and unassuming" and Duane noted that he had no idea "until later in college that Mr. Borghi had been a World Cup goalkeeper." Former long-time Saint Louis University coach and teammate of Mr. Borghi, Harry Keogh, talks about their experience in Brazil in this You Tube clip.
